Which Boat Should You Rent in Key West? Deck vs. Pontoon vs. Center Console

Choosing the right boat rental in Key West can make or break your day on the water. Whether you’re cruising to a remote sandbar, snorkeling the reef, or hosting a family outing, the type of boat you choose matters.

In this guide, we’ll compare deck boats, center console boats, and pontoon rentals – helping you pick the perfect fit for your Key West boating adventure.

Let’s break it down.

Deck Boats: Space + Speed for Social Cruising

Deck boat rentals are the ultimate blend of space and performance. With a wide, open layout and extended bow seating, these boats are ideal for larger groups who want to relax, cruise, and enjoy the water in comfort.

Best for:

  • Families and friend groups up to 10
  • Sandbar hangouts
  • Cruising the coastline in style

Pros:

  • Wide, stable platform with plenty of seating
  • Easy to board and move around
  • More horsepower than a pontoon (faster cruising)

Consider Deck Boats if: You want to spread out, enjoy the sunshine, and make stops for swimming or snorkeling without sacrificing comfort or performance.

Center Console Boats: Adventure-Ready and Versatile

If you’re planning to fish, snorkel, or explore with a little more edge, center console rentals are built for it. These boats offer 360° access around the hull, making them perfect for casting lines or jumping in the water.

Best for:

  • Fishing trips
  • Snorkeling excursions
  • Adventurous couples or small groups

Pros:

  • Full walkaround deck for active use
  • More powerful and maneuverable
  • Great for choppy conditions

Consider Center Console if: You’re into hands-on adventure, want to fish the flats, or just prefer a more agile ride.

Pontoon Boats: Laid-Back, Spacious, and Family-Friendly

  • Group outings, birthdays, and sandbar days

Pros:

  • Extremely stable and easy to operate
  • Tons of space for coolers, gear, and lounging

Boat Rentals FAQs

Yes! Rentals and charters include coolers. You’re free to bring your own (including alcohol), just skip the glass containers. Remember, boat drivers must stay sober – drinking and boating don’t mix

We’ll let you know what’s included with your specific trip.

Key West Pontoon boats are popular for sandbar trips – spacious, shaded, and great for groups. Deck boats are a close second if you want a bit more speed, with space. For fishing or speed, a center console rental might be a better fit. Check out our boat rental guide to compare options and find the best fit for your plans.

Want a captain? Our sandbar charters let you relax while we handle the details.
