Are fishing licenses included with Key West boat rentals?
No – fishing licenses are not included with most boat rentals. But they’re easy to get. If you’re renting a boat to fish on your own, you’ll need a Florida saltwater fishing license, which can be purchased online, via the Fish|Hunt FL app, or at many local tackle shops. If you book a fishing charter with a licensed captain, the license is usually included for everyone on board.
Can I rent a boat for fishing in the Key West backcountry?
Yes – backcountry fishing is one of the most popular DIY options. You can rent a boat and head out to fish the flats, mangroves, and channels north of Key West, including areas near the Mud Keys or Jewfish Basin. We recommend a shallow-draft center console for navigating these waters. Tides and wind matter out there.
Do I need to bring my own fishing gear when renting a boat?
